This paper deals with the contribution of the soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects to the seismic analysis of cultural heritage buildings. This issue is addressed by considering, as a case study, the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba (Spain). This study is focussed on the Abd al-Rahman I sector, which is the most ancient part, that dates from the 8th century. The building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is located in a moderate seismic hazard zone. It is built on soft alluvial strata, which amplifies the SSI. Since invasive tests are not allowed in heritage buildings, in this work a non-destructive test campaign has been performed for the characterisation of the structure and the soil. Ambient vibration tests have been used to calibrate a refined 3D macro-mechanical-based finite element model. The soil parameters have been obtained through an in situ geotechnical campaign, that has included geophysical tests. The SSI has been accounted for by following the direct method. Nonlinear static and dynamic time-history analyses have been carried out to assess the seismic behaviour. The results showed that the performance of the building, if the SSI is accounted for, is reduced by up to 20 % and 13 % in the direction of the arcades and in the perpendicular direction, respectively. Also, if the SSI is taken into account, the damage increased. This study showed that considering the SSI is important to properly assess the seismic behaviour of masonry buildings on soft strata. Finally, it should be highlighted that special attention should be paid to the SSI, which is normally omitted in this type of studies, to obtain a reliable dynamic identification of the built heritage.

Buried pipes are subjected to static and dynamic loads depending on their areas of use. To mitigate the risk of damage caused by these effects, various materials and reinforcement methods are utilized. In this study, five buried uPVC pipes designed in accordance with ASTM D2321 standards were reinforced with three different ground improvement materials: Geocell, Geonet, and Geocomposite, and experimentally subjected to dynamic impact loading. Acceleration, velocity, and displacement values were obtained from the experiments. Subsequently, finite element analysis (FEA) was performed using the ABAQUS software to determine stress values and volumetric displacements in the pipes, and the model was validated with a 5-7% error margin. In the final stage of the study, a parametric analysis was conducted by modifying the soil cover height above the pipe and the Geocell thickness in the validated finite element model. The parametric study revealed that the displacement value in the pipe decreased by 78% with an increase in soil cover height, while a 16% reduction was observed with an increase in Geocell thickness. The results demonstrate that the soil improvement techniques examined in this study provide an effective solution for enhancing the impact resistance of buried pipeline systems.

Pile penetration in soft ground involves complex mechanisms, including significant alterations in the soil state surrounding the pile, which influence the pile negative skin friction (NSF) over time. However, the pile penetration process is often excluded from finite element analysis. This paper investigates the impact of pile penetration on the generation of NSF and dragload. A stable node-based smoothed particle finite element method (SNS-PFEM) framework is introduced for two-dimensional axisymmetric conditions and coupled consolidation, incorporating the ANICREEP model of soft soil with a modified cutting-plane algorithm. A field case study with penetration process is simulated to verify the numerical model's performance, followed by a parametric analysis on the effect of penetration rate on NSF during consolidation. Results indicate that without the pile penetration process in NSF analysis can result in an unsafely low estimation of NSF and dragload magnitudes. The penetration rate affects dragload only at the initial consolidation stage. As consolidation progresses, dragload converges to nearly the same magnitude across different rates. Additionally, current design methods inadequately predict the beta value (where beta is an empirical factor correlating vertical effective stress of soil with the pile skin friction) and its time dependency, for which a new empirical formula for the time-dependent beta value is proposed and successfully applied to other field cases.

Freeze-thaw cycles in seasonally frozen soil affect the boundary conditions of aqueducts with pile foundations, consequently impacting their seismic performance. To explore the damage characteristics and seismic behaviour of aqueduct bent frames in such regions, a custom testing apparatus with an integrated cooling system was developed. Two 1/15 scale models of reinforced concrete aqueduct bent frames with pile foundations were constructed and subjected to pseudo-static testing under both unfrozen and frozen soil conditions. The findings revealed that ground soil freezing has minimal impact on the ultimate bearing capacity and energy dissipation of the bent frame-pile-soil system, but significantly enhances its initial stiffness. Additionally, the frozen soil layer exerts a stronger embedding effect on the pile cap, ensuring the stability of the pile foundation during earthquakes. However, under large seismic loads, aqueduct bent frames experience greater damage and residual deformation in frozen soil compared to unfrozen soil conditions. Therefore, the presence of a seasonally frozen soil layer somewhat compromises the seismic performance of aqueduct bent frames. Subsequently, a finite element model considering pile-soil interaction (PSI) and frozen soil hydro-thermal effects was developed for aqueduct bent frames and validated against experimental results. This provides an effective method for predicting their seismic behaviors in seasonally frozen soil regions. Furthermore, based on the seismic damage characteristics of aqueduct bent frame with pile foundations observed in pseudo-static tests, a novel selfadaptive aqueduct bent frame system was designed to mitigate the adverse effects of seasonally frozen soil layer on seismic performance. This system is rooted in the principle of balancing resistance with adaptability, rather than solely depending on resistance. The seismic performance of this innovative system was then discussed, providing valuable insights for future seismic design of reinforced concrete aqueduct bent frames with pile foundations in seasonally frozen soil regions.

Subsea pipelines in Arctic environments face the risk of damage from ice gouging, where drifting ice keels scour the seabed. To ensure pipeline integrity, burial using methods like ploughs, mechanical trenchers, jetting, or hydraulic dredging is the conventional protection method. Each method has capabilities and limitations, resulting in different trench profiles and backfill characteristics. This study investigates the influence of these trenching methods and their associated trench geometries on pipeline response and seabed failure mechanisms during ice gouging events. Using advanced large deformation finite element (LDFE) analyses with a Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) algorithm, the complex soil behavior, including strain-rate dependency and strainsoftening effects, is modeled. The simulations explicitly incorporate the pipeline, enabling a detailed analysis of its behavior under ice gouging loads. The simulations analyze subgouge soil displacement, pipeline displacement, strains, and ovalization. The findings reveal a direct correlation between increasing trench wall angle and width and the intensification of the backfill removal mechanism. Trench geometry significantly influences the pipeline's horizontal and vertical displacement, while axial displacement and ovalization are less affected. This study emphasizes the crucial role of trenching technique selection and trench shape design in mitigating the risks of ice gouging, highlighting the value of numerical modeling in optimizing pipeline protection strategies in these challenging environments.

Large-span corrugated steel utility tunnels are widely used owing to their large spatial spans and excellent mechanical properties. However, under seismic forces, they may experience significant deformation, making repair challenging and posing a serious threat to personal safety. To study the seismic performance of corrugated steel utility tunnels, an equivalent orthotropic plate was introduced, and a simplified three-dimensional refined finite element model was proposed and established. Considering the site conditions of the structure, the structural parameters, and different seismic input conditions, a detailed analysis was conducted using the endurance time analysis method. The results indicated that the simplified model agreed well with the experimental results. The seismic input conditions significantly affected the relative deformation of the structure. Under the action of P waves (compression waves) and P + SV waves (compression and shear waves), the deformation of the upper part of the structure was relatively uniform, whereas under the action of SV waves (shear waves), the deformation of the crown was more evident. The greater the burial depth of the structure, the stronger the soil-structure interaction, and the smaller the increase in relative deformation. In soft soil, the structure was more likely to be damaged and should be carefully observed. Additionally, increasing the corrugation profile of the steel plates during the design process was highly effective in enhancing the overall stiffness of the structure. Based on the above calculation results, the relative deformation rate was proposed as a quantitative index of the seismic performance of the structure, and corresponding values were recommended.

Predicting cumulative surface slope displacements induced by rainfall infiltration is crucial for accurately assessing the risks to potentially affected infrastructure. In this paper the numerical modelling of the case history of Miscano slope is presented. Plaxis 2D code has been used adopting two constitutive laws: the linear elastoplastic model (Mohr-Coulomb, MC) and the Hardening Soil with small strain stiffness (HSsmall). The aim is to test the suitability of these constitutive laws in predicting the hydro-mechanical behaviour of clayey soil slope. Based on long-term field measurements, the parameters of MC and HSsmall have been determined by back analysing the first-year field measurements in terms of cumulative surficial horizontal displacements and pore water pressure. Subsequently, the numerical models have been validated against the analogous field measurements collected from the second year. The numerical models predict with a good agreement the field measurements for both years. In terms of cumulative surficial horizontal displacements, the HSsmall underestimates the field measurements by 21.2% at the end of the first year, while that based on MC exhibits a 32.8% overestimation. Moreover, the initialization procedure clearly affects the cumulative surficial horizontal displacements results obtained with both the HSsmall and MC models for the second year. In fact, the best results have been achieved when the second-year net rainfall have been applied starting from the initial phase used to generate the lithostatic stress state.

Gravel-bearing sandstone reservoirs represent a significant type of reservoir in oil and gas exploration. Due to the difference of the spatial random distribution the content and the shape of the gravel particles, these reservoirs exhibit complex mechanical properties and failure modes. In this study, a numerical model of gravel-bearing sandstone was developed by using the Finite Element Method (FEM) and were verified by the actual indoor experimental data. The effect of the gravel particle sizes, gravel content, and gravel types on the compressive peak strength and microcrack evolution processes are further analyzed. The results reveal that cracks initiate within the sandstone matrix surrounding the gravel and propagate through the gravel with continued loading. The primary factors governing the stability of gravel-bearing sandstone are the gravel radius and content. The variation in gravel penetration rate is synchronized with the changes in peak strength. By embedding gravel particles of different shapes into the model, it is observed that the peak compressive strength of round gravel is comparable to that of elliptical gravel, with both exhibiting higher peak strengths than angular gravel. Regression models demonstrate that the tensile strength difference between the gravel and the sandstone matrix is a critical parameter influencing gravel penetration. Confining pressure has a relatively minor effect on the elastic modulus, while its impact on peak compressive strength is significantly more pronounced.

This study presents a novel seismic control system, the Mega-Sub Controlled Structure System (MSCSS), to address vibration control challenges in tall and super-tall buildings under intense seismic excitations. The proposed hybrid VD-TFPB-controlled MSCSS integrates Triple Friction Pendulum Bearings (TFPBs) as base isolators with Viscous Dampers (VDs) between the mega frame and the vibration control substructure, enhancing damping and seismic performance. MSCSS without VD and MSCSS with VD models are established and verified using an existing benchmark. The hybrid VD-TFPB-controlled MSCSS is then developed to evaluate its vibration control response while considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). Numerical analyses with earthquake records demonstrate its superior performance compared to MSCSS without and with VD systems. Nonlinear dynamic analyses reveal that the hybrid system significantly improves vibration control. However, under SSI, increased structural flexibility leads to higher frame stress and more plastic hinges, particularly on soft soil, which amplifies vibrations. Despite these challenges, the hybrid VD-TFPB-controlled MSCSS effectively enhances seismic resilience, offering a robust solution for tall buildings.

This paper presents coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical finite element analyses (FEAs) of undrained uplift capacity for buried offshore pipelines operating at elevated temperature. An anisotropic thermoplastic soil constitutive model was employed to simulate mechanical behaviour of seabed soil under the combined actions of thermal and mechanical loading. FEAs investigated the influences of different parameters, e.g., pipeline embedment depth, pipe-soil interface roughness, duration of pipeline operation, and operating temperature, on pipeline uplift capacity. Time-dependent evolutions of temperature and excess pore water pressure were also tracked in soil surrounding the pipeline. For different durations of pipeline operation, FEA results revealed an improvement in normalized uplift capacity Nu of pipelines operating under elevated temperature. However, such an increase in Nu was diminished by a maximum of 7 % with increase in the ratio RTH of thermal diffusivity to coefficient of consolidation of surrounding soil. For different normalized pipeline embedment, 20-30 % enhancement of Nu was observed after six months of pipeline operation at 60 degrees C. However, after six months of operation, further improvement in Nu was negligible. Based on FEA results, this paper proposes an equation to estimate pipeline uplift capacity as a function of operating temperature, depth of embedment, and duration of pipeline operation.
