On December 18, 2023, a magnitude MS6.2 earthquake struck Jishishan County, Gansu Province, triggering over 40 seismic subsidence sites within a seismic intensity VI zone, 32 km from the epicenter.The earthquake caused tens of millions in economic losses to mountain photovoltaic power stations. Extensive geological surveys and comparisons with similar landslides (such as soil loosening, widespread cracks, and stepped displacements) triggered by the 1920 Haiyuan MS8.5 earthquake and the 1995 Yongdeng MS5.8 earthquake, this study preliminarily identifies one subsidence sites as a seismic-collapsed loess landslide. To investigate its disaster-causing mechanism: the dynamic triaxial test was conducted to assess the seismic subsidence potential of the loess at the site, and the maximum subsidence amount under different seismic loads were calculated by combining actual data from nearby bedrock stations with site amplification data from the active source; simulation of the destabilization evolution of seismic-collapsed loess landslides by large-scale shaking table tests; and a three-dimensional slope model was developed using finite element method to study the complex seismic conditions responsible for site damage. The research findings provide a theoretical foundation for further investigations into the disaster mechanisms of seismic-collapsed loess landslides.

Hydraulic conductivity plays a significant role in the evolution of liquefaction phenomena induced by seismic loading, influencing the pore water pressure buildup and dissipation, as well as the associated settlement during and after liquefaction. Experimental evidence indicates that hydraulic conductivity varies significantly during and after seismic excitation. However, most previous studies have focused on experimentally capturing soil hydraulic conductivity variations during the post-shaking phase, primarily based on the results at the stage of excess pore water pressure dissipation and consolidation of sand particles after liquefaction. This paper aims to quantify the variation of hydraulic conductivity during liquefaction, covering both the co-seismic and postshaking phases. Adopting a fully coupled solid-fluid formulation (u-p), a new back-analysis methodology is introduced which allows the direct estimation of the hydraulic conductivity of a soil deposit during liquefaction based on centrifuge data or field measurements. Data from eight well-documented free-field dynamic centrifuge tests are then analysed, revealing key characteristics of the variation of hydraulic conductivity during liquefaction. The results show that hydraulic conductivity increases rapidly at the onset of seismic shaking but gradually decreases despite high pore pressures persisting. The depicted trends are explained using the KozenyCarman equation, which highlights the combined effects of seismic shaking-induced agitation, liquefaction, and solidification on soil hydraulic conductivity during the co-seismic and post-shaking phases.

Silica fume and carbide slag can be used to modify waste mud soil (WMS), which can not only improve the mechanical properties of WMS, but also broaden resource utilization ways of silica fume and carbide slag. For that, in this paper, WMS was modified by adopting 8 % carbide slag and silica fume with different dosages (0, 3 %, 5 %, 7 %, 9 %, and 11 %). Then the small-strain dynamic properties of modified WMS were investigated by using resonance column test, and the microscopic mechanism of modified WMS was analyzed based on Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction test (XRD) and Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). It can be found from the resonance column test that the dynamic shear modulus and the damping ratio show an increasing and decreasing trend with the increase of the confining pressure respectively, and both increase with increasing silica fume dosage in the range of 0 to 11 %. A kinetic model applicable to modified WMS was established by introducing the effects of confining pressure and silica fume into the Hardin-Drnevich model. Microscopic testing experiments indicate that there is a reaction between reactive SiO2 in silica fume and Ca(OH)2 in carbide slag, and calcium hydrated silicate (CSH) was generated, which improved the specimen density.

This paper proposes a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) retrofitting scheme for improving the seismic performance of atrium-style metro stations (AMS). Past experimental studies have confirmed that the weakest of the AMS during strong earthquakes is located at the upper-story beam ends. However, there is thus far no candidate for a reference approach to retrofitting and strengthening the AMS. This study addresses this gap by applying CFRP retrofitting to both ends of the upper-story beam. The main objective is to assess the effectiveness of the proposed retrofitting scheme. First, a three-dimensional finite element model is developed to simulate dynamic soil-AMS interaction. The validity of the numerical method is assessed via a comparison with measured data from reduced-scale model tests. Second, a numerical model of the AMS retrofitted with CFRP is built using validated methods. Finally, dynamic time-history analyses of the AMS with and without CFRP retrofitting are conducted, and their dynamic responses, including inter-story drift, dynamic strain, and tensile damage, in conjunction with the lateral displacement of the surrounding ground, are compared. Comparison of the results for the non-retrofitted and retrofitted structures shows that CFRP retrofitting significantly reduces both the principal strains and tensile damage factors at the upper-story beam ends while slightly increasing those values at the mid-span of the beam; additionally, it does not change the structural lateral deformation. Therefore, it can be concluded that CFRP retrofitting could effectively improve the seismic performance of the AMS without changing its lateral stiffness.

A comprehensive series of tests, including dynamic triaxial, monotonic triaxial and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests, were carried out on reconstituted landfill waste material buried for over twenty years in a closed landfill site in Sydney, Australia. Waste materials collected from the landfill site were treated with varying percentages of cement, and both treated and untreated specimens were investigated to evaluate the influence of cement treatment. The study examined the dynamic properties of cement-treated landfill waste, including cumulative plastic deformation, resilient modulus, and damping ratio, and also analysed the impact of cyclic loading on post-cyclic shear strength in comparison to pre-cyclic shear strength. The UCS tests and monotonic triaxial tests demonstrated that untreated specimens subjected to monotonic loading exhibited a progressive increase in strength with rising axial strain, whereas cement-treated specimens reached a peak strength before experiencing a decline. During cyclic loading, with the inclusion of cement, a significant reduction in cumulative plastic deformation and damping ratio was observed, and this reduction was further enhanced with increasing cement content. Conversely, the resilient modulus showed substantial improvement with the addition of cement, and this enhancement was further amplified with increasing cement content. The formation of cementation bonds between particles curtails particle movement within the landfill waste material matrix and prevents interparticle sliding during cyclic loading, leading to lower plastic strains and damping ratio while increasing resilient modulus. Post-cyclic monotonic testing revealed that cyclic loading caused the partial breakage of the cementation bonds, resulting in reduced shear strength. This reduction was higher on samples treated with lower cement content. Overall, the findings of the research offer crucial insights into the possibility of cement-treated landfill waste as a railway subgrade, laying the groundwork for informed design decisions in developing transport infrastructure over closed landfill sites while using landfill waste materials available on site.

A utility tunnel is an infrastructure that consolidates multiple municipal pipeline systems into a shared underground passage. As long linear structures inevitably cross different soils, this paper aims to accurately assess the seismic damage to a shallow-buried utility tunnel in a non-homogeneous zone by employing a viscous-spring artificial boundary and deriving the corresponding nodal force equations. The three-dimensional model of the utility tunnel-soil system is established using finite element software, and a plug-in is developed to simulate the three-dimensional oblique incidence of SV waves with a horizontal non-homogeneous field. In this study, the maximum interstory displacement angle of the utility tunnel is used as the damage indicator. Analysis of structural vulnerability based on IDA method using PGA as an indicator of seismic wave intensity, which considers the angle of oblique incidence of SV waves, the type of seismic waves, and the influence of the nonhomogeneous field on the seismic performance of the utility tunnel. The results indicate that the failure probability of the utility tunnel in different soil types increases with the incident angle and PGA. Additionally, the failure probability under the pulse wave is higher than that under the non-pulse wave; Particular attention is given to the states of severe damage (LS) and collapse (CP), particularly when the angle of incidence is 30 degrees and the PGA exceeds 0.6g, conditions under which the probability of failure is higher. Additionally, the failure probability of the non-homogeneous zone is greater than that of sand and clay; the maximum interlayer displacement angle increases with the incident angle, accompanied by greater PGA dispersion, indicating the seismic wave intensity. The maximum inter-layer displacement angle increases with the incident angle, and the dispersion of the seismic wave intensity indicator (PGA) becomes greater. This paper proposes vulnerability curves for different working conditions, which can serve as a reference for the seismic design of underground structures.

Expansive soil, characterized by significant swelling-shrinkage behavior, is prone to cracking under wet-dry cycles, severely compromising engineering stability. This study combines experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation approaches to systematically investigate the improvement effects and micromechanisms of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on expansive soil. First, direct shear tests were conducted to analyze the effects of PVA content (0 %-4 %) and moisture content (30 %-50 %) on the shear strength, cohesive force, and internal friction angle of modified soil. Results show that PVA significantly enhances soil cohesive force, with optimal improvement achieved at 3 % PVA content. Second, wet-dry cycle experiments revealed that PVA effectively suppresses crack propagation by improving tensile strength and water retention. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations uncovered the distribution of PVA between montmorillonite (MMT) layers and its influence on interfacial friction behavior. The simulations demonstrated that PVA forms hydrogen bonding networks, enhancing interlayer interactions and frictional resistance. The improved mechanical performance of PVAmodified soil is attributed to both nanoscale bonding effects and macroscale structural reinforcement. This study provides theoretical insights and technical support for expansive soil stabilization.

Mesh-free methods, such as the Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method, have recently been successfully developed to model the entire wetting-induced slope collapse process, such as rainfall-induced landslides, from the onset to complete failure. However, the latest SPH developments still lack an advanced unsaturated constitutive model capable of capturing complex soil behaviour responses to wetting. This limitation reduces their ability to provide detailed insights into the failure processes and to correctly capture the complex behaviours of unsaturated soils. This paper addresses this research gap by incorporating an advanced unsaturated constitutive model for clay and sand (CASM-X) into a recently proposed fully coupled seepage flow-deformation SPH framework to simulate a field-scale wetting-induced slope collapse test. The CASM-X model is based on the unified critical state constitutive model for clay and sand (CASM) and incorporates a void-dependent water retention curve and a modified suction-dependent compression index law, enabling the accurate prediction various unsaturated soil behaviours. The integration of the proposed CASM-X model in the fully coupled flow deformation SPH framework enables the successful prediction of a field-scale wetting-induced slope collapse test, providing insights into slope failure mechanisms from initiation to post-failure responses.

This paper deals with the contribution of the soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects to the seismic analysis of cultural heritage buildings. This issue is addressed by considering, as a case study, the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba (Spain). This study is focussed on the Abd al-Rahman I sector, which is the most ancient part, that dates from the 8th century. The building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is located in a moderate seismic hazard zone. It is built on soft alluvial strata, which amplifies the SSI. Since invasive tests are not allowed in heritage buildings, in this work a non-destructive test campaign has been performed for the characterisation of the structure and the soil. Ambient vibration tests have been used to calibrate a refined 3D macro-mechanical-based finite element model. The soil parameters have been obtained through an in situ geotechnical campaign, that has included geophysical tests. The SSI has been accounted for by following the direct method. Nonlinear static and dynamic time-history analyses have been carried out to assess the seismic behaviour. The results showed that the performance of the building, if the SSI is accounted for, is reduced by up to 20 % and 13 % in the direction of the arcades and in the perpendicular direction, respectively. Also, if the SSI is taken into account, the damage increased. This study showed that considering the SSI is important to properly assess the seismic behaviour of masonry buildings on soft strata. Finally, it should be highlighted that special attention should be paid to the SSI, which is normally omitted in this type of studies, to obtain a reliable dynamic identification of the built heritage.

Open-ended pipe piles (OEPPs) are widely used in offshore foundations, yet accurately predicting their driving responses remains challenging due to soil plug complexities. Existing pile driving analysis models inadequately characterize the effects of soil plug, potentially leading to driving problems such as hammer refusal, pile running, and structural damage. This paper proposes an effective soil plug (ESP) model for OEPP driving analysis. The ESP model considers the effective range of soil plug, which exerts internal resistance that increases exponentially with depth while the beyond of effective range contributes only mass inertia. It also accounts for the relative slippage at the pile-soil plug interface. A differential iterative method is developed to solve the ESP model. Subsequently, investigations including the model validation and parameter analysis are conducted. Model validations against existing models and field measurements confirms the reliability of the ESP model. Parameters sensitivity analysis reveals the importance of soil plug length and distribution type of internal resistance on the pile dynamic responses. In addition, if soil plug slippage occurs, the displacement peak of soil plug increases with depth rather than one-dimensional wave attenuation. Furthermore, contrary to previous assumptions of continuous slippage, the soil plug experiences a discontinuous jump-sliding mode under long-duration impact loading. These findings provide theoretical basis for OEPP driving simulation and interpretations of high-strain dynamic test.
