Vulnerability of peat plateaus to global warming was analyzed in northeastern European Russia. A laboratory experiment on artificial incubation of peat was carried out to analyze the resilience of organic matter of frozen peat bogs (palsas) to decomposition. The rate of mineralization of peat organic matter was calculated from data on the CO2 and CH4 emissions from the peat incubated at a temperature of +4 degrees C under artificial aerobic and anaerobic conditions during 1300 days. Peat samples were taken from the active layer (AL), transitional layer (TL), and permafrost layer (PL). The delta 13C and delta 15N isotopes and the C/N, O/C, and H/C ratios were determined as indicators of change in the decomposition rate of organic matter. By the 1300th day of the experiment under aerobic conditions, the total CO2 amount released from the analyzed samples (per 1 g of carbon) was 10.24-37.4 mg C g-1 (on average, 25.76 mg C g-1), while under anaerobic conditions, it was only 2.1-3.38 mg C g-1 (on average, 3.15 mg C g-1). The CH4 emission was detected only in the peat from the transitional layer in very small quantities. The incubation experiment results support the hypothesis that peat plateaus are resilient, especially under anaerobic conditions, regardless the ongoing climate warming.

Climate change in the northern circumpolar regions is rapidly thawing organic-rich permafrost soils, leading to the substantial release of dissolved CO2 and CH4 into river systems. This mobilization impacts local ecosystems and regional climate feedback loops, playing a crucial role in the Arctic carbon cycle. Here, we analyze the stable carbon (delta 13C) and radiocarbon (F14C) isotopic compositions of dissolved CO2 and CH4 in the Sagavanirktok and Kuparuk River watersheds on the North Slope, Alaska. By examining spatial and seasonal variations in these isotopic signatures, we identify patterns of carbon release and transport across the river continuum. We find consistent CO2 isotopic values along the geomorphological gradient, reflecting a mixture of geogenic and biogenic sources integrated throughout the watershed. Bayesian mixing models further demonstrate a systematic depletion in 13C and 14C signatures of dissolved CO2 sources from spring to fall, indicating increasing contributions of aged carbon as the active layer deepens. This seasonal deepening allows percolating groundwater to access deeper, older soil horizons, transporting CO2 produced by aerobic and anaerobic soil respiration to streams and rivers. In contrast, we observe no clear relationships between the 13C and 14C compositions of dissolved CH4 and landscape properties. Given the reduced solubility of CH4, which facilitates outgassing and limits its transport in aquatic systems, the isotopic signatures are likely indicative of localized contributions from streambeds, adjacent water saturated soils, and lake outflows. Our study illustrates that dissolved greenhouse gases are sensitive indicators of old carbon release from thawing permafrost and serve as early warning signals for permafrost carbon feedbacks. It establishes a crucial baseline for understanding the role of CO2 and CH4 in regional carbon cycling and Arctic environmental change.

Climate change poses a serious threat to permafrost integrity, with expected warmer winters and increased precipitation, both raising permafrost temperatures and active layer thickness. Under ice-rich conditions, this can lead to increased thermokarst activity and a consequential transfer of soil organic matter to tundra ponds. Although these ponds are known as hotspots for CO2 and CH4 emissions, the dominant carbon sources for the production of greenhouse gases (GHGs) are still poorly studied, leading to uncertainty about their positive feedback to climate warming. This study investigates the potential for lateral thermo-erosion to cause increased GHG emissions from small and shallow tundra ponds found in Arctic ice-wedge polygonal landscapes. Detailed mapping of fine-scale erosive features revealed their strong impact on pond limnological characteristics. In addition to increasing organic matter inputs, providing carbon to heterotrophic microorganisms responsible for GHG production, thermokarst soil erosion also increases shore instability and water turbidity, limiting the establishment of aquatic vegetation-conditions that greatly increase GHG emissions from these aquatic systems. Ponds with more than 40% of the shoreline affected by lateral erosion experienced significantly higher rates of GHG emissions (similar to 1200 mmol CO2 m-2 yr-1 and similar to 250 mmol CH4 m-2 yr-1) compared to ponds with no active shore erosion (similar to 30 mmol m-2 yr-1 for both GHG). Although most GHGs emitted as CO2 and CH4 had a modern radiocarbon signature, source apportionment models implied an increased importance of terrestrial carbon being emitted from ponds with erosive shorelines. If primary producers are unable to overcome the limitations associated with permafrost disturbances, this contribution of older carbon stocks may become more significant with rising permafrost temperatures.

Permafrost thaw causes the seasonally thawed active layer to deepen, causing the Arctic to shift toward carbon release as soil organic matter becomes susceptible to decomposition. Ground subsidence initiated by ice loss can cause these soils to collapse abruptly, rapidly shifting soil moisture as microtopography changes and also accelerating carbon and nutrient mobilization. The uncertainty of soil moisture trajectories during thaw makes it difficult to predict the role of abrupt thaw in suppressing or exacerbating carbon losses. In this study, we investigated the role of shifting soil moisture conditions on carbon dioxide fluxes during a 13-year permafrost warming experiment that exhibited abrupt thaw. Warming deepened the active layer differentially across treatments, leading to variable rates of subsidence and formation of thermokarst depressions. In turn, differential subsidence caused a gradient of moisture conditions, with some plots becoming consistently inundated with water within thermokarst depressions and others exhibiting generally dry, but more variable soil moisture conditions outside of thermokarst depressions. Experimentally induced permafrost thaw initially drove increasing rates of growing season gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (R-eco), and net ecosystem exchange (NEE) (higher carbon uptake), but the formation of thermokarst depressions began to reverse this trend with a high level of spatial heterogeneity. Plots that subsided at the slowest rate stayed relatively dry and supported higher CO2 fluxes throughout the 13-year experiment, while plots that subsided very rapidly into the center of a thermokarst feature became consistently wet and experienced a rapid decline in growing season GPP, R-eco, and NEE (lower carbon uptake or carbon release). These findings indicate that Earth system models, which do not simulate subsidence and often predict drier active layer conditions, likely overestimate net growing season carbon uptake in abruptly thawing landscapes.

Freezing and thawing profoundly affect soil carbon cycling. Under the influence of climate change, rising temperatures and glacier shrinkage in arid regions have increased the spring river supply to lakes. However, intense evaporation in summer and seasonal fluctuations in lake water levels alter the magnitude and direction of carbon emissions. Yet, the mechanisms of temperature and groundwater level factors on arid zone lake wetlands remain unclear. This study, through field monitoring, found that during soil freezing periods, Phragmites reduced emissions by 95.21% and increased emissions by 3.91% during thawing periods. Tamarix Chinensis and bare land exhibited a decrease in carbon uptake of 42.77% and 85.25% during soil freezing periods, and a decrease in carbon uptake of 41.98% and 2.17% during thawing periods. By constructing a freeze-thaw simulation device, we simulated CO2 emissions characteristics under different water level conditions during freeze-thaw processes, including water injection at 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, 40 cm (corresponding to water levels 40 cm, 30 cm, 20 cm, 10 cm below the soil surface), as well as scenarios of anhydrous and flooding periods. The results showed that under freeze-thaw conditions, Phragmites exhibited the strongest carbon uptake when water was injected at 20 cm, transitioning from emissions during the anhydrous period to carbon uptake. Tamarix Chinensis exhibited the strongest carbon uptake during freeze-thaw cycles when water was injected at 10 cm, showing a 93.69% increase compared to the anhydrous period. Meanwhile, the bare land exhibited the strongest carbon uptake during freeze-thaw cycles in the no water period. Lower temperatures and higher water levels favor increased carbon uptake in lake wetlands. This study identifies optimal water levels for carbon uptake in lake wetlands during freeze-thaw, and the important role of water level and temperature conditions on carbon emissions, providing valuable insights for assessing the carbon feedback mechanisms in lake wetlands under future climate change.

Snow is critically important to the energy budget, biogeochemistry, ecology, and people of the Arctic. While climate change continues to shorten the duration of the snow cover period, snow mass (the depth of the snow pack) has been increasing in many parts of the Arctic. Previous work has shown that deeper snow can rapidly thaw permafrost and expose the large amounts of ancient (legacy) organic matter contained within it to microbial decomposition. This process releases carbonaceous greenhouse gases but also nutrients, which promote plant growth and carbon sequestration. The net effect of increased snow depth on greenhouse gas emissions from Arctic ecosystems remains uncertain. Here we show that 25 years of snow addition turned tussock tundra, one of the most spatially extensive Arctic ecosystems, into a year-round source of ancient carbon dioxide. More snow quadrupled the amount of organic matter available to microbial decomposition, much of it previously preserved in permafrost, due to deeper seasonal thaw, soil compaction and subsidence as well as the proliferation of deciduous shrubs that lead to 10% greater carbon uptake during the growing season. However, more snow also sustained warmer soil temperatures, causing greater carbon loss during winter (+200% from October to May) and year-round. We find that increasing snow mass will accelerate the ongoing transformation of Arctic ecosystems and cause earlier-than-expected losses of climate-warming legacy carbon from permafrost.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions from freshwater ecosystems are predicted to increase under climate warming. However, freshwater ecosystems in glacierized regions differ critically from those in non-glacierized regions. The potential emissions of CO2 and CH4 from glacierized environments in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) were only recently recognized. Here, the first direct measurement of CO2 and CH4 emission fluxes and isotopic composition during the spring of 2022 in 13 glacial lakes of the TP revealed that glacial lakes were the previously overlooked CO2 sinks due to chemical weathering in glacierized regions. The daily average CO2 flux was -5.1 & PLUSMN; 4.4 mmol m(-2) d(-1), and the CO2 consumption could reach 38.9 Gg C-CO2 yr(-1) by all glacial lakes in the TP. This consumption might be larger during summer when glaciers experience intensive melting, highlighting the importance of CO2 uptake by glacial lakes on the global carbon cycle. However, the studied glacial lakes were CH4 sources with total emission flux ranging from 4.4 & PLUSMN; 3.3 to 4082.5 & PLUSMN; 795.6 & mu;mol m(-2) d(-1). The large CH4 range was attributed to ebullition found in three of the glacial lakes. Low dissolved organic carbon concentrations and CH4 oxidation might be responsible for the low CH4 diffusive fluxes of glacial lakes without ebullition. In addition, groundwater input could alter CO2 and CH4 emissions from glacial lakes. CH4 in glacial lakes probably had a thermogenic source; whereas CO2 was influenced mainly by atmospheric input, as well as organic matter remineralization and CH4 oxidation. Overall, glacial lakes in the TP play an important role in the global carbon cycle and budget, and more detailed isotopic and microbial studies are needed to constrain the contributions of different pathways to CO2 and CH4 production, consumption and emissions.

Climate warming can affect freeze-thaw cycle (FTCs) patterns in northern high-latitude regions and may affect permafrost carbon emissions. The response of carbon release and microbial communities to FTCs has not been well characterized. Here, we conducted laboratory incubation experiments to investigate the relationships among carbon emissions, bacterial community, and soil variables in a permafrost-affected forest-wetland ecotone in Northeast China. The emission rates of CO2 and CH4 increased during the FTCs. FTC amplitude, FTC frequency, and patch type had significant effects on carbon emissions. FTCs increased the contents of soil DOC, NH4+-N, and NO3--N but reduced bacterial alpha diversity. CO2 emissions were mainly affected by bacterial alpha diversity and composition, and the inorganic nitrogen content was the important factor affecting CH4 emissions. Our findings indicated that FTCs could significantly regulate CO2 and CH4 emissions by reducing bacterial community diversity and increasing the concentration of available soil substrates. Our findings shed new light on the microorganism-substrate mechanisms regulating the response patterns of the soil carbon cycle to FTCs in permafrost regions.

Short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) including methane, tropospheric ozone, and black carbon in this work, is a set of compounds with shorter lifetimes than carbon dioxide (CO2) and can cause warming effect on climate. Here, the effective radiative forcing (ERF) is estimated by using an online aerosol-climate model (BCC_AGCM2.0_CUACE/Aero); then the climate responses to SLCPs concentration changes from the pre-industrial era to the present (1850-2010) are estimated. The global annual mean ERF of SLCPs was estimated to be 0.99 [0.79-1.20] W m(-2), and led to warming effects over most parts of the globe, with the warming center (about 1.0 K increase) being located in the mid-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere (NH) and the ocean around Antarctica. The changes in annual mean surface air temperature (SAT) caused by SLCPs changes were more prominent in the NH [0.78 (0.62-0.94) K] than in the Southern Hemisphere [0.62 (0.45-0.74) K], and the global annual mean value is 0.70 K. By looking at other variable responses, we found that precipitation had been increased by about 0.10 mm d(-1) in mid- and high-latitudes and decreased by about 0.20 mm d(-1) in subtropical regions, with the global annual mean value of 0.02 mm d(-1). Changes in SLCPs also influenced atmospheric circulation change, a northward shift in the Intertropical Convergence Zone was induced due to the interhemispheric asymmetry in SAT. However, it is found in this work that SLCPs changes had little effect on global average cloud cover, whereas the local cloud cover changes could not be ignored, low cloud cover increase by about 2.5% over high latitudes in the NH and the ribbon area near 60 degrees S, and high cloud cover increased by more than 2.0% over northern Africa and the Indian Ocean. Finally, we compared the ERFs and global and regional warming effects of SLCPs with those induced by CO2 changes. From 1850 to the present, the ERF of SLCPs was equivalent to 66%, 83%, and 50% of that of CO2 in global, NH, and SH mean, respectively. The increases in SAT caused by SLCPs were 43% and 55% of those by CO2 over the globe and China, respectively.

Wildfire frequency and expanse in the Arctic have increased in recent years and are projected to increase further with changes in climatic conditions due to warmer and drier summers. Yet, there is a lack of knowledge about the impacts such events may have on the net greenhouse gas (GHG) balances in Arctic ecosystems. We investigated in situ effects of an experimental fire in 2017 on carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) surface fluxes in the most abundant tundra ecosystem in West Greenland in ambient and warmer conditions. Measurements from the growing seasons 2017 to 2019 showed that burnt areas became significant net CO2 sources for the entire study period, driven by increased ecosystem respiration (ER) immediately after the fire and decreased gross ecosystem production (GEP). Warming by open-top chambers significantly increased both ER and GEP in control, but not in burnt plots. In contrast to CO2, measurements suggest that the overall sink capacity of atmospheric CH4, as well as net N2O emissions, were not affected by fire in the short term, but only immediately after the fire. The minor effects on CH4 and N2O, which was surprising given the significantly higher nitrate availability observed in burnt plots. However, the minor effects are aligned with the lack of significant effects of fire on soil moisture and soil temperature. Net uptake and emissions of all three GHG from burnt soils were less temperature-sensitive than in the undisturbed control plots. Overall, this study highlights that wildfires in a typical tundra ecosystem in Greenland may not lead to markedly increased net GHG emissions other than CO2. Additional investigations are needed to assess the consequences of more severe fires.
