This research explores the synthesis of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) for the development of a cost-effective bioplastic film that can serve as a sustainable alternative to synthetic plastic. Replacing plastic packaging with CMC-based films offers a solution for mitigating environmental pollution, although the inherent hydrophilicity and low mechanical strength of CMC present significant challenges. To address these limitations, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were employed as a biocompatible and non-toxic reinforcement filler to improve CMC's properties. A solution casting method which incorporated varying concentrations of ZnO NPs (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%) into the CMC matrix allowed for the preparation of composite bioplastic films, the physicochemical properties of which were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The results revealed that the ZnO NPs were well-integrated into the CMC matrix, thereby improving the film's crystallinity, with a significant shift from amorphousness to the crystalline phase. The uniform dispersion of ZnO NPs and the development of hydrogen bonding between ZnO and the CMC matrix resulted in enhanced mechanical properties, with the film CZ20 exhibiting the greatest tensile strength-15.12 +/- 1.28 MPa. This film (CZ20) was primarily discussed and compared with the control film in additional comparison graphs. Thermal stability, assessed via thermogravimetric analysis, improved with an increasing percentage of ZnO Nps, while a substantial decrease in water vapor permeability and oil permeability coefficients was observed. In addition, such water-related properties as water contact angle, moisture content, and moisture absorption were also markedly improved. Furthermore, biodegradability studies demonstrated that the films decomposed by 71.43% to 100% within 7 days under ambient conditions when buried in soil. Thus, CMC-based eco-friendly composite films have the clear potential to become viable replacements for conventional plastics in the packaging industry.
This study investigated potato starch/agar-based bioplastics' structure, properties, and biodegradability by adding ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) biogenically synthesized using Coriandrum sativum extract. ZnO NPs presented crystalline structure, good optical properties, and a size of 6.75 +/- 1.4 nm, which were added at various concentrations (419.66-104.23 ppm) in bioplastics and their presence was confirmed via EDS elemental analysis and X-ray fluorescence. The highest NPs concentration contributed to a smoother surface, while FTIR and Raman analyses suggested interactions between the NPs and functional groups of the biopolymeric matrix. ZnO NPs addition slightly reduced bioplastic transparency but significantly improved UV-A and UV-B blocking capacities. It also increased hydrophobicity, evidenced by a 22 % reduction in water absorption and a 55 % increase in contact angle. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that NPs raised the bioplastic's thermal stability. Mechanical property tests showed that ZnO NPs concentrations had negligible or negative effects probably due to the heterogeneous distribution of NPs, or the non-isotropic characteristic of the bioplastic. Finally, biodegradability assays in seawater and soil revealed over 43.5 % and 66 % degradation after 15 and 28 days, respectively. Therefore, biosynthesized ZnO NPs mainly enhanced the bioplastic's UV-blocking capacity, hydrophobicity, and thermal properties, offering an eco-friendly option for future studies/applications.
The decomposition of returned straw is increasing facing the negative impacts by metal nanoparticles (NPs), however, which may be modulated by soil fauna and this modulation effect is unclear. Here, the interactive effects of ZnO NPs with soil fauna on wheat straw decomposition were investigated in a potted rice cropping system. The results showed that ZnO NP below middle concentrations did not significantly influence straw decomposition, and mass loss was mainly driven by microfauna and microbes. High concentrations of ZnO NPs significantly impeded decomposition, mainly by reducing the complexity of fungal communities. This negative effect was ascribed to the promotion of Zn solubilization by bacterial taxa such as unclassified Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Gemmatimonadetes. ZnO NPs had a greater impact on soil microorganisms than on fauna, reduced microbial activity, promoted the released straw nutrients entering into the soil by damaging nutrient transferring microorganisms and dominated the effects on soil stoichiometry. However, soil fauna significantly increased the activities of C- and N-releasing enzymes, decreased the activity of P-releasing enzymes, regardless of ZnO NP concentration, and promoted straw C decomposition. ZnO NPs altered soil microbial community composition, but these changes were modulated by soil fauna. Nonetheless, nutrient transport by fungi such as Ascomycota and Zygomycota and grazing by fauna were the predominant modulators on straw stoichiometry. The results of this study revealed that rational control of soil fauna will be helpful for promoting straw decomposition and efficient recycling of straw nutrients by crops under ZnO NP contamination. High ZnO NP concentrations inhibit straw decomposition mainly by reducing diversity of fungal community.The negative effects of ZnO NPs are ascribed to Zn solubilization by bacterial taxa such as unclassified Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Gemmatimonadetes.ZnO NPs have greater impact on soil microorganisms than on fauna, reduce microbial activity, promote the released nutrients into soil and dominate the effects on soil stoichiometry.Fungal transport (e.g., Ascomycota and Zygomycota) and fauna grazing are the predominant modulators on straw stoichiometry.
The indiscriminate use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in daily life can lead to their release into soil environment. These ZnO NPs can be taken up by crops and translocated to their edible part, potentially causing risks to the ecosystem and human health. In this study, we conducted pot experiments to determine phytotoxicity, bioaccumulation and translocation depending on the size (10 - 30 nm, 80 - 200 nm and 300 nm diameter) and concentration (0, 100, 500 and 1000 mg Zn/kg) of ZnO NPs and Zn ion (Zn2+) in bok choy, a leafy green vegetable crop. After 14 days of exposure, our results showed that large-sized ZnO NPs (i.e., 300 nm) at the highest concentration exhibited greater phytotoxicity, including obstruction of leaf and root weight (42.5 % and 33.8 %, respectively) and reduction of chlorophyll a and b content (50.2 % and 85.2 %, respectively), as well as changes in the activities of oxidative stress responses compared to those of small-sized ZnO NPs, although their translocation ability was relatively lower than that of smaller ones. The translocation factor (TF) values decreased as the size of ZnO NPs increased, with TF values of 0.68 for 10 - 30 nm, 0.55 for 80 - 200 nm, and 0.27 for 300 nm ZnO NPs, all at the highest exposure concentration. Both the results of micro X-ray fluorescence (mu-XRF) spectrometer and bio-transmission electron microscopy (bio-TEM) showed that the Zn elements were mainly localized at the edges of leaves exposed to small-sized ZnO NPs. However, the Zn elements upon exposure to large-sized ZnO NP were primarily observed in the primary veins of leaves in the mu-XRF data, indicating a limitation in their ability to translocate from roots to leaves. This study not only advances our comprehension of the environmental impact of nanotechnology but also holds considerable implications for the future of sustainable agriculture and food safety.
Nanotechnology offers an innovative application as an eco-friendly food packaging film fabricated along with a degradable active mixture (AM). The AM is an assortment of alloyed metal oxide nanoparticles (Ag-ZnO), citron powder (AA), and Curcuma peel powder (CPP). Alloyed nanoparticles (NPs) were observed to exhibit a hexagonal structure from the experimental X-ray diffraction. Compositional and morphological study of the NPs (22.69 nm) and AM (32 nm) was done using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and zeta- potential was observed to be -14.7 mV, indicating the stability of NPs. The prepared film was observed to be more effective with antibacterial analysis against Escherichia coli, exhibiting 72% of inhibition and antioxidant activity with IC50: 51.56% using the 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Film 1, Film 2, Film 3, and Film 4 were fabricated with the AM and observed to be perfectly encapsulated by PVA using XRD. FESEM images of the film exhibit the aggregation of NPs with biocomposites in perfect distribution. The mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, elongation at break, tensile strength, and ultimate tensile strength (UTS- 5.37 MPa) were experimented for the films. The degradation rate was observed to be 6.12% for film 1 using the soil burial method. The study emphasizes that NPs along with biocomposite upgrade the sustainability of the packaging film with improved mechanical and physicochemical properties. The synthesized film with biomaterials could be used as a green food package to store fruits, vegetables, and sweets in the food industry.
