An analytical methodology was developed for the first time in this work enabling the simultaneous enantiomeric separation of the fungicide fenpropidin and its acid metabolite by Capillary Electrophoresis. A dual cyclodextrin system consisting of 4 % (w/v) captisol with 10 mM methyl-beta-cyclodextrin was employed in a 100 mM sodium acetate buffer at pH 4.0. Optimal experimental conditions (temperature 25 degrees C, separation voltage -25 kV, and hydrodynamic injection of 50 mbar x 10 s) allowed the simultaneous separation of the four enantiomers in <10.7 min with resolutions of 3.1 (fenpropidin) and 3.2 (its acid metabolite). Analytical characteristics of the method were evaluated and found adequate for the quantification of both chiral compounds with a linearity range from 0.75 to 70 mg L-1, good accuracy (trueness included 100 % recovery, precision with RSD<6 %), and limits of detection and quantification of 0.25 and 0.75 mg L-1, respectively, for the four enantiomers. No significant differences were found between the concentrations determined and labelled of fenpropidin in a commercial agrochemical formulation. The stability over time (0-42 days) of fenpropidin enantiomers using the commercial agrochemical formulation was evaluated in two sugar beet soils, revealing to be stable at any time in one sample, while in the other a decrease of 45 % was observed after 42 days. Individual and combined toxicity of fenpropidin and its metabolite was determined for the first time for marine organism Vibrio fischeri, demonstrating higher damage caused by parent compound. Synergistics and antagonists' interactions were observed at low and high effects levels of contaminants.

In recent years, excessive accumulations of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and nitrogen (N) have been observed in the groundwater of agricultural regions, particularly in flood irrigation areas. Nevertheless, the causes of this phenomenon and the associated hydrobiogeochemical processes remain elusive. This study demonstrated that redox fluctuations instigated by flood irrigation triggered a synergistic interaction between the N cycles and the activation of Fe and Mn oxides, thereby resulting in elevated concentrations of Fe, Mn, and N simultaneously. Static experiments revealed that the properties of the topsoil exerted a profound influence on the N induced release of Fe and Mn. The black soil (TFe: 1.5-2.3 times, Mn(II): 1.1-1.5 times, nitrate: 1.3-1.4 times) had greater release potential than meadow and dark brown soils due to higher electron donors/acceptors and substrates. Dynamic column experiments further elucidated that the wet-dry cycles induced by agricultural cultivation regulated the release process through the formation of zonal redox gradients and the structuring of microbial community. Organic nitrogen mineralization, chemolithotrophic nitrification, and Feammox/Mnammox were identified as the primary mechanisms responsible for the reductive dissolution of Fe-Mn oxides. On the other hand, autotrophic denitrification, with nitrate serving as the electron acceptor, constituted the main process for the reoxidation of Fe and Mn. Furthermore, the agricultural activities exerted a significant impact on the nitrate attenuation process, ultimately resulting in the recurrence of TFe (black soil: 1.5-6.3 times) and nitrate (black soil: 1.4-1.6 times) pollution during the phase after harvesting of rice (days 40-45) in saturated zone. The findings of this study not only deepened the understanding of the intricate interactions and coupled cycles between primary geochemical compositions and anthropogenic pollutants, but also provided a scientific foundation for the effective management and prevention of groundwater pollution stemming from agricultural cultivation processes.

Soil chemical washing has the disadvantages of long reaction time, slow reaction rate and unstable effect. Thus, there is an urgent need to find a cost-effective and widely applicable alternative power to facilitate the migration of washing solutions in the soil, so as to achieve efficient removal of heavy metals, reduce the risk of soil compaction, and mitigate the damage of soil structure. Therefore, the study used a combination of freeze-thaw cycle (FTC) and chemical washing to obtain three-dimensional images of soil pore structure using micro-X-ray microtomography, and applied image analysis techniques to study the effects of freeze-thaw washing on the characteristics of different pore structures of the soil, and then revealed the effects of pore structure on the removal of heavy metals. The results showed that the soil pore structure of the freeze-thaw washing treatment (FT) became more porous and complex, which increased the soil imaged porosity (TIP), pore number (TNP), porosity of macropores and irregular pores, permeability, and heavy metal removal rate. Macroporosity, fractal dimension, and TNP were the main factors contributing to the increase in TIP between treatments. The porous structure resulted in larger effective pore diameters, which contain a greater number of branching pathways and pore networks, allowing the chemical washing solutions to fully contact the soil, increasing the roughness of the soil particle surface, mitigating the risk of soil compaction, and decreasing the contamination of heavy metals. The results of this study contribute to provide new insights into the management of heavy metal pollution in agricultural soils.

Study area: The Binggou and adjacent Yakou catchments in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Study focus: Hillslope flow paths were studied using hydrochemical data of various water types in the spring snowmelt and summer rainfall periods based on hydrochemical tracers and endmember mixing analysis. New hydrological insights for the study region: End-member mixing analysis confirmed the dominance of surface and near-surface runoff during the spring snowmelt. Specifically, the spring Binggou stream water had 61 % surface runoff, 22 % shallow groundwater, and 17 % near-surface runoff. The spring Yakou stream water had 64 % snowmelt, 25.5 % near-surface runoff, and 10.5 % riparian saturated soil water at a depth of 20 cm. The application of end-member mixing analysis failed in the summer rainfall period, and shallow subsurface flow contributed the most to the streamflow (similar to 100 %). The average acid-neutralizing capacity of the spring Yakou stream water was 611 mu eq/L, increasing to 841 mu eq/L in the summer, and for the Binggou stream water, the values were 747 mu eq/L and 1084 mu eq/L, respectively, indicating that the thawed soil layers had a significant buffering effect on stream water chemistry. This study revealed seasonal shifts in flow paths and stream sources, with a transition from surface to subsurface flow influenced by meteorological conditions and the active layer thickness. Future climate change may enhance subsurface flow recharge, leading to less diluted streamflow and stronger water-soil interactions.

The environmental threat, pollution and damage posed by heavy metals to air, water, and soil emphasize the critical need for effective remediation strategies. This review mainly focuses on microbial electrochemical technologies (MET) for treating heavy metal pollutants, specifically includes Chromium (Cr), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Nickel (Ni), and Cobalt (Co). First, it explores the mechanisms and current applications of MET in heavy metal treatments in detail. Second, it systematically summarizes the key microbial communities involved, analyzing their extracellular electron transfer (EET) processes and summarizing strategies to enhance the EET efficiencies. Next, the review also highlights the synergistic microbial interactions in bioelectrochemical systems (BES) during the recovery and removal (remediation) processes of heavy metals, underscoring the crucial role of microorganisms in the transfer of the electrons. Then, this paper discussed how factors including pH values, applied voltages, types and concentrations of electron donors, electrode materials, biofilm thickness and other factors affect the treatment efficiencies of some specific metals in BES. BES has shown its great superiority in treating heavy metals. For example, for the treatments of Cr6+, under low pH conditions, the recovery and removal rate of Cr-6(+) by double chambers microbial fuel cell (DCMFC) can generally reach 98-99%, with some cases even achieving 100% (Gangadharan & Nambi, 2015). For the treatments of heavy metal ions such as Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+, BES can also achieve the rates of treatments of more than 90% under the corresponding conditions of appropriate pH values and applied voltages(Choi, Hu, & Lim, 2014; W. Teng, G. Liu, H. Luo, R. Zhang, & Y. Xiang, 2016; Y. N. Wu et al., 2019; Y. N. Wu et al., 2018). After that, the review outlines the future challenges and the research opportunities for understanding the mechanisms of BES and microbial EET in heavy metal treatments. Finally, the prospect of future BES researches are pointed out, including the combinations with existing wastewater treatment systems, the integrations with the wind energy and the solar energy, and the application of machine learning (ML) in future BES. This article has certain significance and value for readers to better understand the working principles of BES and better operate and control BES to deal with heavy metal pollutants.

The fundamental cause of frost heave and salt expansion of saline soil is the water condensation and salt crystallization during the freezing process. Therefore, controlling the water and salt content is crucial to inhibit the expansion behaviors of saline soil. Recently, electroosmosis has been demonstrated to accelerate soil dewatering by driving hydrated cations. However, its efficiency in mitigating the salt-induced freezing damages of saline soil requires further improvement. In this study, a series of comparative experiments were conducted to investigate the synergistic effects of electroosmosis and calcium chloride (CaCl2) on inhibiting the deformation of sodium sulfate saline soil. The results demonstrated that electroosmosis combined with CaCl2 dramatically increased the cumulative drainage volume by improving soil conductivity. Under the external electric field, excess Na+ and SO42- ions migrated towards the cathode and anode, respectively, with a portion being removed from the soil via electroosmotic flow. These processes collectively contributed to a significant reduction in the crystallization-induced deformation of saline soil. Additionally, abundant Ca2+ ions migrated to cathode under the electric force and reacted with OH- ions or soluble silicate to form cementing substances, significantly improving the mechanical strength and freeze-thaw resistance of the soil. Among all electrochemical treatment groups, the soil sample treated with 10 % CaCl2 exhibited optimal performance, with a 71 % increase in drainage volume, a 180 similar to 443 % enhancement in shear strength, and a 65.1 % reduction in freezing deformation. However, excessive addition of CaCl2 resulted in the degradation of soil strength, microstructure, and freeze-thaw resistance.

Natural rubber latex (NRL) is a biopolymer consisting of isoprene monomers in a cis configuration connected by double bonds that can degrade naturally. Most natural rubber (NR) based products are single-use items and its microbial degradation process is relatively slow. Hence, this review highlights the importance in the enhancement of biodegradation of NR, the methods applied to increase the biodegradation rate, and characterization of biodegradation of rubber. The biodegradability of NR-based products is enhanced via selective microorganism strains, suitable composting environment and the addition of biofillers. Rubber oxygenase enzymes and latex cleavage protein are major contributors in the biodegradation of NR-based products, while biofillers such as chitosan, cellulose whiskers and starch enhances biodegradation rate up to 60 %. Biodegradation of NR-based products is confirmed through characterization of physicochemical, thermal and mechanical properties using SEM, XRD, FTIR, GPC, TGA, UTM, physical appearance and weight loss. NR-based materials with enhanced biodegradability have many uses, thus its customizability should be studied further in terms of different product forms, fabrication method, orientation of biofiller used and incorporation of metal organic frameworks.

This study investigated the dynamic properties of red mud (RM)-reinforced volcanic ash (VA) by dynamic triaxial tests. The effects of stress state (dynamic stress sigma d, confining stress sigma 3), dynamic frequency (f) and load waveform (F) on the accumulative plastic strain (epsilon p) have been investigated. The findings indicate a significant influence of the stress state on epsilon p. When sigma d reaches 120 kPa, the specimens exhibit insufficient strength, leading to shear failure. As sigma 3 increases, the dynamic stresses that lead to specimen destabilization also exhibit an upward trend. The effect of f on epsilon p is limited. The epsilon p does not exhibit a clear or consistent developing pattern with increasing f. As for the F, the epsilon p exhibited by the specimens subjected to sinusoidal wave loads is less than that observed under trapezoidal wave loads. Shakedown theory classifies deformation responses into plastic shakedown, plastic creep and incremental collapse. The epsilon p curve patterns of RM-reinforced VA exhibit plastic shakedown and incremental collapse without significant plastic creep characteristics under cyclic loading. A predictive model for epsilon p under cyclic loading is established, which has good predictability. This study presents a novel application of VA and RM, offering substantial research insights into waste recycling.

A common physical technique assessed for improving expansive clays is by the addition of natural fibres to the soil. A good understanding of the impact of stabilisation using fibres on the clay soil's constituents, microfabric, and pore structure is, however, required. Mixtures of clay and fibre, regardless of type or extent, can never change the natural composition of the clay. Even the smallest part must still consist of spaces with clay with the original physical properties and mineralogy. This suggests that, although the mixture may show beneficial physical changes over the initial clay soil, its spatial attributes in terms of mineralogical characteristics, remain unchanged. This paper discusses some of the fundamentals that are not always adequately considered or addressed in expansive clay research, aiming to improve the focus of current and future research investigations. These include the process, mechanics, and implications of chemical and physical soil treatment as well as the concept of moisture equilibration.

Copper (Cu) is a toxic metal that accumulates in soil due to agricultural and industrial activities, potentially impacting plant growth and productivity. Our study examined the phytotoxic effects of Cu on Vigna radiata L. by exposing plants to a series of Cu concentrations (1, 4 and 7 mM) under controlled conditions. Growth parameters, photosynthetic performance, biochemical traits, and oxidative stress indicators were analyzed in 21-day-old Cu-treated plants and compared with control plants. The results demonstrated a concentration-dependent decline in shoot and root biomass, relative water content (RWC), pigment content, photosynthetic efficiency, carbohydrates, and lipid content. Conversely, oxidative stress markers such as malondialdehyde (MDA), electrolyte leakage, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity and proline accumulation increased significantly with increasing Cu concentrations, indicating cellular damage. Notably, protein levels increased with increased Cu concentrations, which may contribute to their tolerance to metal stress, however, it was insufficient to mitigate stress. Further research is needed to validate these findings and explore the mechanisms underlying copper stress tolerance.
